SHE’S A VAMPIRE

She’s a vampire

She feeds off of me night and day

A vampire

She feeds off of me

That’s OK

Whenever she’s around

I live beneath the ground

With her

She’s a vampire

She’s a vampire

With her I’m equally cursed and blessed

A vampire

She put the unconscious mind

To rest

And later in the dark

The soul does

Cartwheels for a lark

She’s a vampire

Plain and stark

At night, at night

I flit around the light

And never settle

Like a moth, a moth

Who can’t turn the engine off

Not in fine fettle

She’s a vampire

And when I lay me down to sleep

A vampire sends me

Vibrations from the deep

She’s worth her weight in gold

But what she’s got can not

Be sold

She’s a vampire

1989

When the sun

Raised its ugly head

With a frown

In this ugly town

I was sold

Grim and eighties cold

Brought up red

In up over my head

So in up over my head I was seeing red

I had the ten-year Tory blues

Down in my pointed shoes

And all hell to pay

All hell to keep me hanging on the path I’d gone

These endless miles with no reward

Intensely bored to be ignored

Oh I say

Yes I said, I said

I have something to offer

Something to offer

I have something to offer

Something to offer

But nobody was listening with their blissed-out beats

And so headlong into a dream world I did then retreat

And there I stayed

There I stayed

With

The Wild Swans & Nick Drake

& The Velvets and Fairport

The Go-Betweens & Kate Bush

& The Triffids and Kraftwerk

The Wolfgang Press & Swell Maps

& The Passage & Talk Talk

The Blue Nile & The Soft Boys

& The Beatles & Grant Hart

The Rain Parade & Eno

& Tim Buckley & Beefheart

New Order & Pere Ubu

& Mark Eitzel & Big Star

The Chills & Ivor Cutler

& Incredible String Band

The Seeds & Television

& over and over again

BETWEEN TWO WORLDS

She’s the catalyst amongst my pigeons

She’s the one who’s made me see

That the fuel I burn upon is

Non-sustainable energy

And although I guess I should be grateful

It just makes me want to spit

On her

I was crowned the king of nothing much

A long, long time ago

There was snow and hail and frost and rain

And frost and hail and snow

And nothing in particular to be inside an eighties Northern town

If you were pale and far and bright

As me

What I will never understand is why it ran this way

What I will never comprehend is what got left behind

And what is here to stay

I was standing on a land spit in September between two worlds

The one I have right now and one I left behind

And I made agreement with myself to lay the past to rest

Signed sealed and documented I the undersigned

But there was one thing I just couldn’t figure out

And that was whether you were part of what’s abandoned or what’s kept

As I wept

Into the sea
